Geeks everywhere are still mourning the loss of of Ralph McQuarrie, the visionary conceptual artist who played an integral role in designing the look of the original Star Wars trilogy. Even if you weren’t familiar with McQuarrie by name or even if you’re somehow not a fan of Star Wars, it’s undeniable that McQuarrie’s work has left an indelible influence on all sci-fi movies, comics, anime, and of course, video games.

As games become more expensive to make, the big publishers are more likely to play it safe; they’ll stick to what they know will sell and usually that means sequels. Now, I don’t mind a lot of sequels, even annualized releases, if they manage to maintain a certain level of quality. Outside of the usual fanboy complaints from people who weren’t going to play these games anyway, I think most gamers are pretty happy whenever a new Halo, Zelda, or Uncharted is announced, and if you enjoyed the previous entry in the series then it’s only natural to want more.
Star Wars: The Old Republic Release Date Comes After Star Wars: Galaxies Shuts Down
Star Wars fans don’t need to be sad when Star Wars: Galaxies gets shut down on December 15, as it will be quickly replaced with another Star Wars MMORPG just a few days after. Sony Online Entertainment has announced the availability of Star Wars: The Old Republic on December 20 and fans can continue playing a massively multiplayer online role-playing game set in the Sci-Fi Universe created by the legendary George Lucas.
Bioware is ‘Greatly’ Expanding it’s Beta Testers for Star Wars: The Old Republic
At PAX Prime this year, Bioware announced at their panel for Star Wars: The Old Republic panel that they will be sending out a horde of beta invites to hopefully tide some lucky fans until the games release. Bioware has stated, they will begin sending out the invites starting September 2, so keep a close watch on your inbox (and spam) as they are sending them out periodically throughout all of next month.

LucasArts Cutting Some of Their Work Force
Get it, work force, funny right? Well, it’s not too funny for those losing their jobs this holiday season at the studio behind the wildly successful Force Unleashed 2. With that sequel out the door, the only remaining announced project on LucasArts’ slate is Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars, This may be the reason for less staffing. LucasArts also made a statement to Gamespot:

After strong sales of the The Force Unleashed 2 video game, it only makes sense that Lucas Arts would continue ahead with DLC to appease the mass craving for more. What better location to use the force than Andor, during the same time period of as the Return of the Jedi film. Gio Gorsi, executive producer at Lucas Arts compares it to original Force Unleased’s DLC by saying “we like to call this an “infinite storyline”, much like the Hoth Bonus Mission from the first Force Unleashed game that gave us an alternate take on that iconic battle from the Empire Strikes Back.”

Star Wars games are often few and far between but always anticipated by a massive fan base.
