Sony’s Playstation Vita will hit American shores in less than a month, and expectations are understandably high for the newest handheld powerhouse. While the Vita received a strangely cold reception when it launched in Japan over a month ago, the system still tops many gamers’ most wanted lists, and it’s easy to see why: I mean, who doesn’t want something that basically amounts to a portable PS3? But while the Vita is undeniably a sexy piece of hardware, we shouldn’t forget that this isn’t Sony’s first attempt at bringing the console experience to “the handheld ghetto” (as Sony calls it.) Yes, I’m talking about Sony’s poor, oft-forgotten original PSP, and now, on the eve of the launch of it’s successor, it seems pertinent to look back on the tumultuous history of Sony’s first foray into the handheld gaming market.

This Week in Japanese Sales
Final Fantasy Type-0 is going to be released internationally
With the PSP market all but dead in every territory except for Japan, gamers in the West have sadly missed out on some of the system’s last great games. Due to low sales and high piracy, publishers are hesitant to bring over more recent PSP hits from Japan like Monster Hunter Portable 3rd, Phantasy Star Portable Infinity, and Valkyria Chonicles 3, all three of which garnered rave reviews upon their release in their home territory. Thankfully, Square-Enix hasn’t given up on Sony’s original gaming handheld yet, as the company has confimed that the latest Final Fantasy for PSP, Type 0, will indeed see an overseas release.

This news may come as a a surprise to many as the big N has always done exceptionally well in the land of the rising run and after releasing a brand new handheld they have been outshone by the near six-year-old PSP. The sales numbers don’t lie and it was reported that Sony’s portable sold near 15,000 more units in one weeks time with 58,057 while the 3DS only moved 42,979.
PSP Price Drops to $130 to Get Sales up Before NGP
Price drops are quite customary to electronic devices and Sony is certainly no exception. Though many would say they were too late to do so on their portable powerhouse, which started off at $250. It was dropped down to $170 three years ago and stayed at that price point as PSP Go became the new hotness and that also saw a $50 price drop.
