Nintendo planning for new “2D” Mario title

Nintendo planning for new “2D” Mario title

New Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo DS and Wii systems did an excellent job at restoring the spirit of what Mario games were, all while mixing these fuzzy feelings of nostalgia with new concepts. Both games were a huge success, and Nintendo recently acknowledged their plans to give the fans more.

In a general summary of things to come, Iwata summarized Nintendo’s accomplishments while outlining goals for 2012.

“Although there is no logo here, we are planning to release a totally new side-scrolling action Super Mario in 2D as a key title for the Nintendo 3DS in the next fiscal year,” Iwata told GoNintendo.

Iwata also touched on difficulties faced with selling the 3DS, and that Nintendo may have to sell the hardware “below cost” in order to remedy the situation.

Other titles mentioned in the report (through the form of logo) include Paper Mario and Luigi’s Mansion 2. Iwata says that the new 2D Mario project should release in “the next fiscal year.”

RUMOR: Nintendo might rename the Wii-U

RUMOR: Nintendo might rename the Wii-U

Since day one, the name “Wii-U” has been ridiculed. If you weren’t groaning over the fact that Nintendo just lazily slapped a “U” at the end of an already criticized console name, you were one of the people making references to Ling from Kung Pow! Enter the Fist. After much debate, it looks like Nintendo agrees — the name (probably) won’t work.

Save 50% on Select 3DS games at Best Buy

Save 50% on Select 3DS games at Best Buy

Best Buy has partnered with Nintendo to create the “Nintendo Zone” at select locations. The “zone” apparently allows 3DS owners to connect to the eShop, play games online, and trade info with other 3DS owners… which basically just makes it sound like any other regular wi-fi hotspot. But if you take your 3DS down to the Nintendo Zone this week and you’ll be rewarded with a coupon that will get you 50% on a selection of 3DS games.

Nintendo, EA, and Sony drop support for SOPA

Nintendo, EA, and Sony drop support for SOPA

After GoDaddy losing a very large portion of business and getting heaps of backlash for their support of SOPA in a coordinated maneuver, I could see other companies following suit. Now, EA, Nintendo, and Sony, some of the biggest names in entertainment, have done so, dropping support for the bill absolutely everyone hates. There is no word whenever they have simply stopped supporting it or now oppose it.

3DS Demos coming, Kid Icarus Uprising Online details

3DS Demos coming, Kid Icarus Uprising Online details

During last night’s Nintendo Direct livestream, company President Satoru Iwata spoke about some upcoming new features for the 3DS. The long awaited (and much needed) ability to download demos is now available on the Japanese 3DS e-shop, with Metal Gear Solid 3D, Resident Evil: Revelations, Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy, and Sega’s Rhythm Thief being among the first demos of full, retail games available for download. These demos are only available on Japanese 3DS’s at the moment, but it’s safe to assume that a similar selection of demos will hit the American and European e-shops sooner rather than later.

Warning: Lithium Batteries May Cause Wii Remote Explosion

A Michigan family arrived home one night to find that one of their Wii remotes had exploded, sending pieces of plastic around the area and engulfing the room in smoke.

Reports from WXYZ Action News (via Kotaku) claim that the family had replaced the supplied alkaline batteries — the recommended type for Wii remotes — with lithium batteries, a big no-no according to the user manual.

Nintendo: Confusion Over Shigeru Miyamoto “Retirement”

Nintendo: Confusion Over Shigeru Miyamoto “Retirement”

Nintendo fans were in an uproar last night when an interview from Wired’s Game|Life confirmed the retirement of Shigeru Miyamoto, the company’s long-time head of game design.

Creator of games like Donkey Kong, The Legend of Zelda and Super Mario Bros, Miyamoto claimed he had thought about stepping down from his position, but would remain in the company to create his own titles once again.

“I’m not saying that I’m going to retire from game development altogether,” he said. “What I mean by retiring is, retiring from my current position.”

Nintendo, however, contacted Reuters Japan and claimed Miyamoto is staying put.  When asked about his retirement, a spokeswoman from the company stated that Miyamoto simply wanted to see younger developers involved with heavier projects.
