Fans have waited 12 years for Diablo 3, and it looks like they’re going to have to wait a little while longer before playing Blizzard’s latest action RPG. The game was supposed to launch tonight, but somehow Blizzard underestimated the popularity of their own game, as the company’s servers were immediately overwhelmed within minutes of the game going live.

Valve Allowed to use Dota Name, Blizzard Backpedals
Back in February I reported on the legal skirmish between Blizzard and Valve over the use of the name Dota in Valve’s upcoming Dota 2. Well it appears as if the battle is over, and even though Blizzard’s press release says the agreement was mutual, it’s pretty clear Valve came out on top as they’re the ones that get to keep using the name Dota. Blizzard on the other hand has now changed the name of their game from Blizzard Dota to Blizzard All-Stars. I may not be a legal expert, but I’m pretty sure that this all backfired on Blizzard, I mean they are the ones who originally filed and yet they ended up being the ones to change their name while pretty much nothing happened to Valve. Then again, this could all be just a case of, to quote Notch, “lawyers being lawyers.”
Korea Creates $1.8K League of Legends Tournament
If you thought commercials in South Korea featuring Starcraft 2 were good, then get excited for some featuring League of Legends. It looks as if the little-MOBA-that-could has become popular enough to deserve its own tournament, at least according to our competitive gaming friends in the eastern hemisphere. They’re willing to pony up almost $200K for not only Korean players, but any team that feels they can compete. I guess now instead of fans crying when their favorite player loses a zealot, they will cry when they give up first blood.
Diablo 3 Finally Has A Release Date
“WoW Killer” Might Not be Another MMO Report Says
According to this report, Riot Games, owned by Chinese parent company Tencent Holdings, generated more revenue on the PC than Activision Blizzard in 2011. While the numbers are still being tabulated, this means that for the first time in a long time Blizzard’s insanely popular MMO World of Warcraft might not make it to the #1 spot. I guess Blizzard can take solace in the fact that they started all of this. Riot Games’ League of Legends was inspired by DOTA, which was made on Blizzard’s robust Warcraft 3 map editor almost ten years ago. Without that map editor, it isn’t a stretch to think that DOTA and LoL would never have existed.
Diablo III to Launch Without PVP
Remember when Blizzard would delay games indefinitely, saying that their next game would be released “when it’s finished?” Well, I guess Blizzard is getting a little more flexible with their old standards, as the company announced today that the highly anticipated Diablo III would be dropping PVP mode so that the game could be released earlier.

In Court, Blizzard to ‘Push All Mid’ Against Valve Over Dota
Well it’s official, Joystiq and Kotaku are both reporting today that Blizzard is taking Valve to court over the use of the name Dota in Valve’s upcoming Dota 2. This is a confusing issue, seeing as Blizzard didn’t really develop Dota, and one of the people who did, Icefrog, now works for Valve. This is going to be tough to explain.
Don’t Hold Your Breath, Diablo III Still on for Q2 Release
I’m not letting you do this to me again Blizzard. We’ve talked about this before, you’re not allowed to make promises you can’t keep. Am I supposed to believe you this time? Or, is this going to be another one of those, “I know we had plans tonight, but we’re going to have to reschedule for next year.” I really want to believe in a Q2 release for Diablo III, but I’ve heard this all before.
Blizzard Confirms Diablo III is Coming to Consoles
It seems like an odd way to announce a new(-ish) game, but while answering questions with fans over Twitter, Blizzard community manager Micah Whipple confirmed that the company’s highly anticipated hack and slash is indeed making it’s way to consoles.

What you may not have known is that it the Book of Cain will be released December 13th, and includes Cain’s first hand account of his time in the Diablo world. Blizzard puts Diablo 3 ahead for rating in Korea despite controversy over Auction House.
As was reported recently, the “gambling” aspect of Diablo 3 having randomly-dropped loot and being able to sell it for real-world cash caused a stir in South Korea and was possibly running foul of laws and regulations in the country. However, Paul Sams, the Chief Operating Officer of Blizzard held a press conference for the Korean Media was asked about the issue multiple times, and he gave an answer.
