Nintendo held another one of their regular “Nintendo Direct” streaming press conferences tonight, and while most of the hour long video was comprised of trailers for games we’ve already heard about, Nintendo did have a few surprise announcements to make.

Pokemon & Nobunaga’s Ambition Crossover Headed to America

Have you ever been playing the excellent Total War: Shogun 2 and thought to yourself “Well, this is good, but it’d be better with Pokemon.” Well, if that highly improbably thought has ever crossed your mind, you’re in luck — Nintendo announced today that their previously Japan-only monster battling/feudal warlord sim will invade US shores on June 18th.

Namco Bandai, Capcom, and Sega Team Up for Crossover Project

The biggest surprise out of the Nintendo Direct live stream today came not from Nintendo, but rather, three of Japan’s biggest third parties: Capcom, Sega, and Namco announced that all three companies are working together on some sort of mysterious cross-over game for the 3DS. Seaman Comes Again

Seaman Comes Again

Sorry about that headline. I couldn’t resist.

Anyway, Japanese news outlet Nikkei is reporting that Nintendo is launching a new initiative in which the Kyoto publisher will pick up and produce entries in other publishers’ franchises. This is a bizarre move for the usually withdrawn and conservative Nintendo, but even more bizarre is the first game they’ve decided to revive: Sega’s virtual life experiment Seaman.

Nintendo planning for new “2D” Mario title

Nintendo planning for new “2D” Mario title

New Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo DS and Wii systems did an excellent job at restoring the spirit of what Mario games were, all while mixing these fuzzy feelings of nostalgia with new concepts. Both games were a huge success, and Nintendo recently acknowledged their plans to give the fans more.

In a general summary of things to come, Iwata summarized Nintendo’s accomplishments while outlining goals for 2012.

“Although there is no logo here, we are planning to release a totally new side-scrolling action Super Mario in 2D as a key title for the Nintendo 3DS in the next fiscal year,” Iwata told GoNintendo.

Iwata also touched on difficulties faced with selling the 3DS, and that Nintendo may have to sell the hardware “below cost” in order to remedy the situation.

Other titles mentioned in the report (through the form of logo) include Paper Mario and Luigi’s Mansion 2. Iwata says that the new 2D Mario project should release in “the next fiscal year.”

RUMOR: Nintendo might rename the Wii-U

RUMOR: Nintendo might rename the Wii-U

Since day one, the name “Wii-U” has been ridiculed. If you weren’t groaning over the fact that Nintendo just lazily slapped a “U” at the end of an already criticized console name, you were one of the people making references to Ling from Kung Pow! Enter the Fist. After much debate, it looks like Nintendo agrees — the name (probably) won’t work.

Save 50% on Select 3DS games at Best Buy

Best Buy has partnered with Nintendo to create the “Nintendo Zone” at select locations. The “zone” apparently allows 3DS owners to connect to the eShop, play games online, and trade info with other 3DS owners… which basically just makes it sound like any other regular wi-fi hotspot. But if you take your 3DS down to the Nintendo Zone this week and you’ll be rewarded with a coupon that will get you 50% on a selection of 3DS games.
