Review: Mortal Kombat

Review: Mortal Kombat

I have to say that I have not been a fan of Mortal Kombat since I last played the third incarnation in the arcades many many years ago. Now when MK first came out – it was amazing. I can remember the sighs of “WOW!” and “OMG!” when looking at the “life-like” CGI captured graphics… aaaah. Those were the days.

In the meantime, 2D fighting games have moved on in various different directions, some more successfully than others, and Mortal Kombat has been more or less left in their wake. The transition to 3D, in my opinion, killed the series for me and apart from a few matches of each MK down the years I haven’t really been pulled in… until now.

Homefront Review

Homefront Review

Homefront is a first person shooter which has obtained a lot of attention, possibly due to its completely refreshing setting, when compared to similar games, such as Battlefield or Call of duty. Homefront was developed by a fairly inexperienced developer; Kaos studio. Kaos studio has just one previous title to their name – Frontlines: Fuel of War – which was barely a noteworthy game by any standard, despite sharing.

Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood Review

Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood Review

I’ve had a tumultuous relationship with the Assassin’s Creed series: I hated the first game and thought it was completely overrated, but it’s sequel was such a massive improvement that I fell in love with it instantly and consider it one of my favorite games of all time.  Now the third console entry in the series has arrived, in the form of Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood, and the results are… Well, I believe the phrase that best sums up Brotherhood is “One step forward, two steps back.”

PS3 Outsells Xbox 360 For 2010; Looks To Get Ahead In 2011

PS3 Outsells Xbox 360 For 2010; Looks To Get Ahead In 2011

The gaming console wars seem to be heating up quite fast in 2011! In estimates for the first half of 2010, it was quite clear that the PS3 was beating Microsoft’s Xbox 360 by a small margin. However, with newer figures released with the end of 2010, it has become quite clear that the PS3 platform has clearly outperformed the 360 by  more than a million. Though there seem to be varying sources which quote different numbers, with one claiming the PS3 is ahead by a million whereas another quoted the PS3 as being ahead by as much as 2 million, there can be no doubt that 2010 clearly belonged to the PS3, though closely.

PS3′s Killzone 3 Receives Lukewarm Reviews

PS3′s Killzone 3 Receives Lukewarm Reviews

Killzone 3, launched recently by Sony for the PS3 is seen as a very big advancement in the genre of first person shooters and science fiction combat games. The game can be played in stereoscopic 3D using the new PlayStation Move motion sensing controller to provide an experience in immersive reality gaming which hasn’t been witnessed before. However, even while these features make the experience and feel of the game an innovation, they don’t quite make up for the shortcomings of the game in the other fields.

LittleBigPlanet 2 review

LittleBigPlanet 2 review

User created content is probably the driving force behind most of the popular websites people visit today; whether it comes in the form of home videos of people getting hit in the crotch on Youtube or attention whoring, self-pity posts on Facebook, or the socially acceptable stalking of Twitter, the most popular websites right now all revolve around one key concept: people want an outlet to express themselves, even if their manner of expression is  best left… well, unexpressed.

Bayonetta Review

Bayonetta Review

Do you like guns? Giant Bosses? Heroine(not the drug sort)? How does a ankle-gun-totting-angel-fighting-sexy-witch-hero sound?

Bayonetta is chalk full of these and more, so much more. The graphics are crisp and vibrant, the action is fast-paced and intricate, even the story is enjoyable albeit an odd one. This PS3/Xbox 360 game is unique and is certainly worth a play through.

Killzone 3 Beta First Impressions

Killzone 3 Beta First Impressions

Even though the unofficial release of the game has been leaked on the Internet I took the law-abiding route and played the Open Beta available to everyone for free, legally. I took a couple hours out of my normal gaming session to see what we will be expecting in the mutiplayer aspect of Killzone 3 when it releases later this month.

Fallout New Vegas Review

Fallout New Vegas Review

Fallout New Vegas might just be the best RPG ever made. Just one problem though: It isn’t finished.

I’ve spent the last week or so wandering across the post apocalyptic expanse of the Mojave Wasteland, fighting off raiders, thieves,  mutated insects, and radioactive monsters, all while double and triple-crossing the various armies, politicians, and power-hungry maniacs who populate (and are fighting for control of) the titular city of New Vegas.  This is a game that I’ve already poured dozens of hours into, and judging by the amount of incomplete sidequests I have left to do and the vast swaths of unexplored territory still remaining on my map, I’m still probably going to have to pour dozens of more hours into this game before I’ve seen all of the content it has to offer.

Final Fantasy XIII Review

Final Fantasy XIII Review

Final Fantasy XIII is a divisive game; people either love it or they hate it.  What do I think of it?  Well… I guess I’m weird, because I don’t really like it, nor do I hate it outright either.  To put it simply, FF13 is equally brilliant and terrible. It’s a weird mishmash of incredibly high production values mixed with some surprisingly half-assed gameplay elements that create an overall mediocre final product.  It’s not the worst game ever made, but it’s certainly not anywhere close to being the best either.

Scott Pilgrim vs The World Review

Scott Pilgrim vs The World Review

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World was a great movie that referenced video games with a type of respect and genuine admiration that you’ll probably never see again within the mainstream media. Too bad then that it completely bombed at the box office, and while I don’t have an exact figure of how many tickets it sold, I’m pretty sure at least 4 people watched it.

Which is a good thing, because now you should be able to wrangle up 3 other friends to play the (mostly) great Scott Pilgrim game with you.

Little Big Planet Review

Little Big Planet Review

The game Little Big Planet was released on October 28th, 2008. The game trailers prior to the release date didn’t exactly give much information as to what the game was about. The trailers showed an epic looking, little customized sack doll journeying though different themed levels. They also showed how certain things in the levels were built and that your character is fully customizable. In other words this game had to be great.

After the game was released, the creators, Media Molecule showed the world just how good this game really was. This game was absolutely amazing! People really took advantage of the fact that they can make awesome levels and share them with the rest of the PS3 network. The original game came with only 50 levels on it. The people of the world showed just how creative they are and now there are over 2 million levels online.
