Hooray! Psychonauts 2 Might Happen… Emphasis on Might

In case you been living under a rock, Tim Schafer over at Double Fine lead an impressive Kickstarter campaign to raise money for a “brand-new, downloadable “Point-and-Click” graphic adventure game for the modern age.” Now, they didn’t mention Psychonauts 2 specifically, but it only took a few hours for members of the community to start asking if it would happen. Normally the hype would end there, and it might have here, except that Notch, creator of Minecraft, wants it to happen also, and he’s willing to put his money where his block-shaped mouth is.

So far Double Fine has raised almost $2 million total to fund the project, and for a documentary to follow the development. It’s an amazing start for something that started less than a week ago, but still not enough to cover the $13 Million budget that the first Psychonauts cost.

Then last week, Notch fired off a tweet to Tim Schafer that really stirred the hive. Essentially, he wants to help Schafer and Double Fine make Pyschonauts 2, and by help I mean give them the money to do so. Some of this is speculation, I mean it is difficult to be nuanced in 140 characters or less, but it seems like that is whats happening. According to Kotaku, their very public discussions about Psychonauts 2 have now become private. This is probably a good thing for the game, this deal wasn’t going to get made in public, even if it started out in the open.

This is all great news for fans of Psychonauts and Double Fine. Schafer himself has been pitching the game for years with no luck. And maybe, just maybe, it will get made without any big corporate interests. Oh, and did I mention he’s been using a fan-made video in his pitches?
