PGI’s decision to issue a PEGI rating of 12 to the controversial party game called Wii Dare has been defended by the organization, which is the primary video game rating body. This controversial rating for the game which is available for the Wii and the PS3 was issued last week. This was followed by the release of the Wii Dare trailer from Ubisoft which became quite infamous after suggesting that the game was best played by couples who swapped partners and participated in games like Wii Remote Spanking. In their assessment of the title PEGI acknowledged the fact that the game contained sexual innuendos which were obvious images of sexual postures and explicit sexual descriptions, which led to an outpour of confusion amongst the gaming communiuty and in some instances an outcry of fury from the public.

PEGI, when speaking to the media this morning, stated that it considered its decision to grant the 12+ rating to the game as a correct decision and added that when people actually start playing the game, they will realize that it doesn’t contain anything that might be considered inappropriate for children of age 12 or older.

A spokesperson for PEGI said that the conclusions drawn by the commenters and the press have been based exclusively on a commercial of the game, whereas the decision of PEGI was based purely on the experience of the game. He added that the issue of a 12+ rating sure did give rise to a lot of confusion, however the content of the game and the interactions that are implied by the game itself do not warrant a higher rating for it. The spokesperson said that the advertising by Ubisoft may make people believe otherwise, however PEGI rates games, not advertisements. The announcement has still not quelled all doubts though, with people claiming that there is usually no smoke without a fire.
